2010 RIVERLAND FIELD & GADGET DAY

On Wednesday 15th & Thursday 16th September the SACIDB took part in the Riverland Field Days. This is a very popular 2 day annual event for the Riverland region, this year attracting a crowd of approximately 16,000 people from throughout South Australia and beyond.

The Board showcased the prize winning cartons of fruit from the Royal Adelaide Show, gave away citrus recipes and citrus information, provided fruit fly area freedom information and displayed information on how the Board utilises levies collected to provide R & D, Biosecurity, Promotions, Export Market Access Development, Industry Development, Food Safety and Issues Management.

ROYAL SHOW SEPTEMBER 3 - 11, 2010

Despite damp conditions , the SACIDB site at the Royal Adelaide Show was inundated by show attendees eager to try our world class citrus and talk to Riverland citrus growers manning our site.

Over the nine days of the show, thousands of fresh squeezed samples of orange juice were provided to patrons and thousands of “supersized” navels provided as part of the Yellow Brick Road (YBR) show bag. The YBR show bag, which was an initiative of the Board, is the most popular show bag at the Royal Show with over 22,000 provided each year.

Again the “Meet the Grower” initiative has proven very popular as show attendees welcomed the opportunity to talk to Riverland growers and sample a range of citrus varieties grown in the Riverland. To assist with the Boards promotion and reinforce the importance of the SA Citrus Industry to this State, Agriculture Minister Michael O’Brien joined Riverland growers on the first day of the show, at our site to help promote our product.

Minister Michael O’Brien was put to good use loading the Boards juice machine and providing samples of fresh squeezed orange juice, much to the delight of patrons.

The SACIDB would like to thank Minister Michael O’Brien for making time to assist in promoting our industry.

HEART FOUNDATION SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT

The National Heart Foundation of Australia has released a summary of research on antioxidants.

The Heart Foundation reviewed over 100 studies to confirm that eating fruit and vegetables and drinking tea helps lower your risk of heart disease. The Heart Foundations detailed findings are being circulated to nutritionists, doctors and other health professionals to help them provide accurate advice to their patients.

The best way to get enough antioxidants is to eat a variety of plant based foods such as vegetables, fruit, legumes, wholegrain breads and cereals, nuts and seeds every day.

Ed: A report previously published by the CSIRO titled 'The Health Benefits of Citrus Fruits' (2003) confirmed that an orange has over 170 phytochemicals and 60 flavonoids carrying antioxidant, anti-viral, anti-allergenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative and anti-carcinogenic effects.

MINISTER HELPS PROMOTE CITRUS AT ROYAL SHOW

Following an invitation from the SA Citrus Industry Development Board (SACIDB), Agriculture Minister Paul Caica attended the Royal Show on Friday 4th September 2009 to help the SACIDB promote the SA Citrus Industry and it's products to the general public.

On the first day of the Royal Show Minister Paul Caica assisted SACIDB grower directors and staff to provide 1,200 samples of juice to the general public. Whole navel oranges were also handed out as part of the Yellow Brick Road (YBR) show bag and a range of new citrus varieties promoted to attendees. By Monday 7th September 6,000 samples of juice and cut citrus segments were provided to the public along with thousands of navel oranges as part of the YBR show bag, making it the busiest first three days on record.

The "Meet the Grower" initiative, in particular, has been especially successful providing the general public with an opportunity to meet Riverland growers, understand production issues and sample new varieties. The Minister's attendance also provided an opportunity for Peter Walker (SACIDB Chairman) and other SACIDB grower directors to discuss issues of critical importance to the industry with the Minister. As a follow up, Minister Paul Caica agreed to meet with Peter Walker on Wednesday 9th September to further discuss the new Irrigator Industry Support Program (IISP) and its application to the SA Citrus Industry.

The SACIDB would like to thank Minister Paul Caica for his assistance at the Royal Show and agreeing at short notice to attend follow up discussions on the IISP.
